6th International EnKF Workshop
June 20-22, 2011
Brakanes Hotel, Ulvik

Welcome to the 6th International EnKF Workshop arranged jointly by IRIS, NERSC and Uni CIPR.

The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and its many variants have been proven effective for data assimilation in large models, including those in atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic, and petroleum reservoir systems. By bringing together technical experts, practitioners, researchers and students for presentations and informal interchange of information, we aim to share research results and suggest important challenges that have yet to be addressed. Read more here.

The 6th International EnKF workshop is arranged by IRIS in collaboration with the Nansen Center (NERSC) and the Uni Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research (CIPR). This event is related to the Research Council of Norway (RCN) supported project "Reservoir characterization using the ensemble Kalman filter''. The participants of this project are IRIS, CIPR, University of Oklahoma, University of Tulsa, and industrial partners.  The workshop provides an excellent venue for meeting people working on the EnKF from both industry and research institutions, as well as for sharing experiences about the use of EnKF on practical problems. The program will be arranged to allow time for informal discussions both during the sessions and during the cultural event held on the second day. For that reason, the workshop will be held in a location with great opportunities for enjoying the outdoors in Norway.  It is open for anyone interested in the EnKF but to provide an atmosphere conducive to the informal interchange of ideas, the program committee reserves the right to restrict the number of participants. We then advise you to register as soon as possible.

Invited speakers:
Elana Fertig (Johns Hopkins University); "Indirect observations and ensemble Kalman filters: assimilating satellite observations with a local ensemble Kalman filter"
Harrie-Jan Hendriks Franssen (Institute of Bio- and Geosciences (IBG)), former; ETH Zürich; "Ensemble Kalman Filter in subsurface hydrology: operational implementation and non-Gaussianity."
Milija Zupanski (Colorado State University); "A control theory approach to nonlinearity and non-differentiability in ensemble data assimilation"
Geir Evensen (Statoil); "An Ensemble Smoother for Assisted History Matching"
Al Reynolds (University of Tulsa); “Towards a More Robust Adaptation of the Ensemble Kalman Filter for Data Assimilation and Uncertainty Quantification in Reservoir Management Applications”
Peter Jan van Leeuwen (Univeristy of Reading); “Particle filters in high-dimensional geophysical systems”

Call for abstract:
All scientists, engineers who wish to share their experience and new achievements with EnKF are invited to submit an abstract (approximately one page) electronically to Randi Valestrand (rv@iris.no). The deadline for submitting an abstract was March 30, 2011.

Program: available here

Dates:  June 20 - 22, 2011

Location:  Brakanes Hotel, Ulvik (Hardanger)

Bustransport:
Mon. June 20: Departure from Grand Hotel Terminus at 09:00. Arrival time in Ulvik; 11.30
Wed. June 22: Departure from Ulvik at 16:30. Arrival time Grand Hotel Terminus; 19:00

Cultural arrangement:
The workshop is located in one of the most famous fjords of Norway, the Hardangerfjord (read more about Hardangerfjord here). The cultural event will therefore contain enjoying and exploring this beautiful landscape. We will go to one of the inner most fjord arms of the Hardanger fjord; Osa. At Osa we will experience the landscape on a guided tour. The tour will fit all participants; choose between slow walking or challenging hiking.
After the trip to Osa we will go to Lekve farm which is fruit farm, apple juice and cider factory, and a restaurant. We will have a tour at the farm before dinner there.

Please notice: Since the cultural arrangement is outdoors it is important to bring good shoes and comfortable clothes for this event. Also, the weather in Norway changes rapidly from sun to rain, so please bring some rain wear.

Exploring Norway further?
If you like to combine the EnKF worshop with a longer stay in Norway, here are some trips that can easily be combined with the stay in Ulvik: Norway in a nutshell. Skip the bus set up between Bergen and Ulvik by the workshop and choose this alternative route which includes a boat trip on the Hardangerfjord with Tide.

Registration fee: NOK 6900 (all taxes included). This includes bus transport from Bergen - Ulvik round trip, two nights at the hotel, two breakfasts, three lunches, dinner on June 20, and cultural arrangement. Please notice: The bus departure is from the Bergen bus station. Please find map here.
If accommodation is needed in Bergen city prior or after the workshop, please contact the following hotel: Grand Hotel Terminus. NOK 865 per night. Deadline for reservation: May 19. Reservation code: EnKF Workshop.
Please notice:  The number of rooms is limited !

Registration: Closed. The registration is binding. For registration after the deadline - please contact Mette S.Myhre (mes@iris.no). Cancellation fee from May 19th: NOK 1500.

Deadline for registration: May 9th 2011
