5th international workshop on ensemble Kalman filter for model updating
May 18-20, 2010
Clarion Hotel Admiral, Bergen
Norway

Welcome to the 5th International EnKF Workshop arranged jointly by IRIS, NERSC and CIPR, University of Bergen.
The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) has now become a viable and popular method for data assimilation in various very large models, e.g., atmospheric, oceanic, and petroleum reservoirs systems. By bringing together leading technical experts, practitioners, researchers and students for presentations and informal interchange of information we aim at not only reviewing the state-of-the-art of EnKF but also at giving practitioners ideas of the possibilities of the methodology and the researchers feedback on the most important challenges that have yet to be addressed. Read more here.

The 5th International EnKF workshop is arranged by IRIS in collaboration with the Nansen Center (NERSC) and CIPR, University of Bergen. This event is related to the Research Council of Norway (RCN) supported project "Reservoir characterization using the ensemble Kalman filter''. The participants of this project are IRIS, CIPR, University of OklahomaUniversity of Tulsa, and industrial partners.
The workshop is an excellent platform to meet people both from industry and research institutions, as well as to share experiences about the use of EnKF. It is open for anyone interested in the topic, but to provide a forum for informal interchange of ideas, the program committee reserves the right to restrict the number of participants. We then advise you to register as soon as possible.

Invited speakers:
Jeffrey Anderson (National Center for Atmospheric Research): "Reducing the impact of sampling errors in ensemble filters".
Craig Bishop (Naval Research Laboratory): "Autonomous ensemble covariance moderation".
Dennis McLaughlin  (Massachusetts Institute of Technology): "Reduced-order modeling for integrated ensemble estimation and control".
Takemasa Miyoshi (University of Maryland): "Adaptive localization and adaptive inflation methods with the LETKF".
Dean Oliver (University of Oklahoma): "Regularization for EnKF - Kalman gain versus ensemble covariance".
Al Reynolds (University of Tulsa): "Localization mitigates sampling error but is the data match good enough for Bayes?"

Presentations: The presentations held during the workshop for which we have received authorization for publication from the speakers are available here.

Call for abstract:
All scientists, engineers who wish to share their experience and new achievements with EnKF are invited to submit an abstract (approximately one page) electronically to Brice Vallès (bv@iris.no). The deadline for submitting an abstract was March 30, 2010.

Tentative program:  available here.

Dates:  May 18 - 20,2010

Location:  Clarion Hotel Admiral, Bergen.

Cultural arrangement:  The year 2010 is the 200th anniversary of the famous violinist and composer Ole Bull (5 February 1810 – 17 August 1880) from Bergen. To celebrate that event, we will have a guided visit of his house on the island Lysøen. The conference dinner will take place at the restaurant Cornelius, which is located on another island. Transportation from the hotel to Lysøen, then to Cornelius, and back to the hotel, approximately at 10:30 p.m., will be done by boat (Epos). The cultural arrangement is included in the fee.

17th of May, Norwegian national day:  The day before the workshop is the Norwegian national day. We strongly recommend you to experience this joyful event somewhat unique and different from other national day celebrations around the world. Since the festivities last the whole day you should plan your arrival in Bergen on Sunday the 16th.

Registration fee: 6800 NOK (all taxes included). This includes two nights at the hotel, two breakfasts, three lunches, dinner on May 18, and cultural arrangement.
Accommodations from May 16-17, and/or 17-18, and/or 20-21 including breakfast, can be arranged by Mette S. Myhre (mes@iris.no) but participants would have to pay the hotel directly for these extra nights. For information, the price for a standard room is 1175 NOK; the price for a room with view on the harbour is 1460 NOK.

Price without hotel: 3750 NOK (all taxes included). This includes the conference, three lunches, and cultural arrangement.

Price without hotel, but with dinner (May 18): 4375 NOK (all taxes included). This includes the conference, three lunches, dinner on May 18, and cultural arrangement.

Note: Since the workshop is in the high season we recommend you to book additional hotel accommodation if needed - as soon as possible.

Registration:  For registration after the deadline - please contact Mette S.Myhre (mes@iris.no). The registration is binding

Financial support: This workshop has received financial support from The Norwegian Research Council through the PETROMAKS program and from industrial partners.
